When I started as a tidying consultant, I relied entirely on the \u2018Marie Kondo\u2019 or KonMari\u00ae brand. I felt that it gave me a certain legitimacy, even confidence in what I was doing.<\/span><\/p>\n

From \"KonMari Consultant\" to \"Japanese Tidying Consultant\"<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

However, in recent months, I have started talking about Japanese tidying rather than Marie Kondo to avoid preconceived notions about her. Being Japanese like her, <\/span>I share her worldview, including spirituality. <\/strong><\/span>which is at the core of her famous tidying method. In fact, this familiarity both comforted and profoundly moved me when I read her book.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nevertheless, I have observed that <\/span>this spiritual aspect is often hidden in Western media<\/strong><\/span>. Sometimes, it even seems that the Marie Kondo method is more about interior decoration\u2014clean, white, minimalist...<\/span><\/p>\n

Although I understand this communication strategy\u2014spirituality can make this foreign approach seem even stranger\u2014I find it unfortunate because <\/span>this is the key element that makes it so different from others<\/strong><\/span>. The goal of Japanese tidying is to live in harmony with one\u2019s belongings and home, which <\/span>transforms tidying from a practical act into an act of kindness and love.<\/strong><\/span> Done with intention, this \u2018chore\u2019 elevates to an art.<\/span><\/p>\n

Every object has a soul and wants to serve its owner<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

It is even said that an object that has existed for 100 years becomes aware and turns into a <\/span>y<\/span><\/em>o<\/span><\/span><\/em>kai<\/span><\/em> called <\/span>tsukumogami<\/span><\/em> (<\/span>\u4ed8\u55aa\u795e<\/span><\/span>). That\u2019s why we should choose them carefully, treat them with kindness, and put them away after use so they can rest. When their mission with us is complete, we let them go, either to serve someone else or to retire.<\/span><\/p>\n

Moreover<\/span> our belongings are our allies, not our enemies<\/strong><\/span>. So, instead of looking for what to get rid of, this approach teaches us to identify what we truly love and makes us feel joy <\/span>tokimeki<\/span><\/em>. We let go of the rest with gratitude because, even if we don't keep it, it has shared our lives.<\/span><\/p>\n

Simply put, <\/span>the KonMari method codifies Japanese-style tidying, makes it easy to apply<\/strong><\/span>, and infuses it with a good dose of joy. <\/span><\/p>\n

Japan Impact 2024<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

My mission is to promote Japanese-style tidying, including its spiritual aspect, to spread joy <\/span>tokimeki<\/span><\/em> around the world. That\u2019s why I\u2019m thrilled to be invited to Japan Impact 2024, which has the theme of \"y<\/span>o<\/span><\/span>kai\", at EPFL in Lausanne from 17 to 18 February. I will be giving two talks and conducting two folding workshops.<\/span><\/p>\n
